How a casement window works
A casement sash swings out on hinges along one side, driven by a crank at the sill. Turning the handle opens it like a door; turning it back pulls the sash tight against the weatherstripping, and a multipoint lock clamps it closed. Because the sash presses into the frame rather than sliding past it, a closed casement tends to seal tightly against air and dust.
The whole sash opens, so the clear opening is close to the full size of the window. That is the biggest functional difference from a slider or a hung window, where one panel always blocks half the opening.
Catching the breeze
An open casement sash sticks out from the wall and acts like a scoop, steering a passing breeze into the room. On a summer evening when the delta breeze comes up from the southwest, a casement hinged on the correct side pulls in more air than a slider of the same size. Ask the installer which side to hinge each unit on based on which way the wall faces.
Casement windows and bedroom egress
Every sleeping room needs an emergency escape opening, covered in California by CRC R319. For new egress openings that means at least 5.7 sq ft of net clear opening (5.0 sq ft on a grade floor), at least 24 in. of clear height, at least 20 in. of clear width, and a sill no higher than 44 in. above the floor.
A slider has to be roughly twice as wide as the clear width you need, because only half of it opens. A casement opens almost fully, so a narrower window can meet the same numbers. That makes casements a common fix when an old bedroom window is too small or its sill is too high to work as an exit. Confirm the clear opening of the specific unit, since hardware and frame width eat into it.
In the City of Sacramento, the building division's retrofit guidelines (CDD-0327) let a like-for-like replacement match the egress rules in force when the house was permitted, provided the permit scope says so. Changing to a casement is one way to do better than that minimum rather than just matching it.
Awning windows: the top-hinged version
An awning window hinges at the top and pushes out at the bottom. Because the open sash forms a little roof over the gap, you can leave it cracked during a light rain. Awnings are usually wider than they are tall, which suits spots high on a wall: above a tub, over a kitchen counter, or stacked under a fixed window.
Awnings are not usually a bedroom exit, since the sash blocks the opening. Fixr puts awning windows at $300–$800 installed, national range.
Where casements make sense, and where they don't
Good fits
- Over a kitchen sink, where a crank is easier to reach than lifting a sash across the counter.
- Bedrooms where the existing opening is tight for egress.
- Walls that catch the evening breeze.
- Contemporary or Mediterranean-style stucco homes with tall, narrow openings.
Poor fits
- Next to a walkway, patio or side yard path, where an open sash sticks out at head height.
- Very wide openings; casements are made in limited widths, so a wide space becomes a pair or a casement-and-fixed combination.
- Openings where you want a window air conditioner; a casement has no place to set one.
Energy rules and glass for 2026 installs
Casements are no exception to Title 24. Under the 2025 code that took effect January 1, 2026, replacement windows in climate zones 11 and 12 must reach U-factor 0.27 and SHGC 0.23 or better. If the whole job is 75 sq ft of window or less, U-0.40 and SHGC-0.35 are allowed. California also caps air leakage for rated windows at 0.3 cfm per square foot.
Ask for the NFRC rating on the exact unit you're buying, not the series in general. Glass options and frame materials are covered on energy-efficient windows and fiberglass windows.
What casement windows cost
National installed ranges from Fixr. Sacramento-specific pricing was not found, so treat these as a starting point.
| Window type | Typical national installed range |
|---|---|
| Casement | $400–$1,200 |
| Awning | $300–$800 |
| Double-hung, for comparison | $300–$1,000 |
Casements usually cost more than hung windows of the same size because of the crank and hinge hardware. Size, frame material and whether the install is an insert or full-frame shift the number. See window replacement cost in Sacramento and compare with double-hung windows.
Hiring for a casement job
Ask the installer which side each sash will hinge on, how far it will swing out, and whether a screen sits inside the window (casement screens do). Verify a C-17 or B license at cslb.ca.gov before signing. Then let us match you with a licensed pro for window replacement in Sacramento.
