FAQ
Window Replacement Questions, Answered
Straight answers on costs, frames, glass, permits and hiring for window replacement in Sacramento and the surrounding cities.
Cost
What does a replacement window cost?
Fixr puts the average at about $800 installed, with most windows between $450 and $1,200. By frame: vinyl $350 to $800, fiberglass $400 to $1,500, wood $600 to $2,000. See window replacement cost in Sacramento.
What does a sliding glass door cost to replace?
National guides put sliding door replacement at about $1,000 to $7,500, averaging around $2,500. Vinyl dual-pane sliders sit at the low end, fiberglass and wood at the high end. See sliding glass door replacement.
Are there rebates or tax credits for windows in 2026?
SMUD's home efficiency rebate page does not list windows, and the federal 25C credit does not apply to windows installed after December 31, 2025.
How much can an installer ask up front?
California law allows an up-front payment limited to 10% of the job or $1,000, whichever comes in lower.
Frames and Glass
Vinyl, fiberglass or wood?
Vinyl is the low-upkeep, lower-cost default for stucco homes. Fiberglass is stiffer and handles dark colors and narrow frames. Wood suits older homes where the interior look matters, and needs finishing. Compare vinyl, fiberglass and wood.
What do U-factor and SHGC mean?
U-factor is how easily heat passes through the whole window; SHGC is how much sunlight becomes heat indoors. Lower is better for both in Sacramento. Read energy-efficient windows.
Why is there fog between my window panes?
The seal on the dual-pane unit has failed and moist air got in. The glass unit can often be replaced alone; see window glass replacement and double-pane windows.
Where is tempered glass required?
In doors, glass near doors, large low panes beside walkways, and glass near tubs, showers, stairs and pools, among other spots set by the residential code. The installer orders tempered units where the code calls for them.
Code and Permits
What does Title 24 require for replacement windows?
Since January 1, 2026, replacement windows in climate zones 11 and 12 need U-factor 0.27 or lower and SHGC 0.23 or lower. A job of 75 sq ft or less may use U 0.40 and SHGC 0.35.
Do I need a permit?
Plan on one. Sacramento County has required a permit for window replacement since 2010, and Rocklin and Roseville have window permit processes. Check with your city's building division; the installer usually pulls it.
Does a replacement bedroom window have to meet egress size?
Bedroom windows must still serve as emergency exits. In the City of Sacramento, a retrofit can match the egress size required when the house was built, if the permit scope says so; new openings need 5.7 sq ft net clear and a sill no higher than 44 inches.
Can the installer remove the sticker on my new windows?
Not the temporary NFRC label. Title 24 says it must stay on until the building inspector has seen it.
Hiring an Installer
Who actually installs my windows?
An independent, licensed installer. Sacramento Clear View Windows is a referral service: we connect you with the installer, who contracts with you directly and is responsible for the work, permit, pricing and warranty.
What license should a window installer have?
CSLB's C-17 Glazing license covers installing windows, glass and glazed doors; general building (B) contractors also do window work. Verify any license at cslb.ca.gov.
Can I cancel after signing?
California gives you three business days to cancel a home improvement contract, or five days if you are 65 or older.
My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
Yes. Window replacement in pre-1978 housing is always covered by the EPA lead-safe (RRP) rule, so the firm doing the work must be lead-safe certified. See how window installation works.
