French door styles
Hinged pair (double French doors)
Both doors swing, leaving the whole opening clear. Needs room for the door swing, inside (in-swing) or onto the patio (out-swing).
Single door with a fixed panel
One door opens and the other stays fixed. A common fit for a standard 6-foot opening where furniture blocks a full swing.
Sliding French doors
Wide stiles and rails that look like French doors on a sliding track, so no swing space is needed. See sliding glass door replacement for standard sliders.
Swapping a slider for French doors
Many Sacramento-area tract homes have an aluminum slider to the backyard. Converting it to French doors is common but is a door replacement, not a window retrofit: the old frame comes out, the opening may need adjusting, and the stucco and interior trim usually need patching. Plan for the swing (out-swing doors keep floor space; in-swing doors are easier to weather-seal under an eave) and check the threshold height against the patio.
Glass ratings and safety glass
Glazed doors count as fenestration under Title 24, so French doors follow the same limits as replacement windows: U-factor 0.27 or lower and SHGC 0.23 or lower in Climate Zones 11 and 12 under the 2025 code. The NFRC label shows both numbers and stays on until final inspection.
Glass in swinging doors is always a hazardous location under the residential code, so every pane must be tempered, with a permanent mark etched or fired into the glass. A permit is typically required because the door and opening change; your installer pulls it. More: energy-efficient windows.
French patio door cost
Fixr puts French door installation at about $1,599 to $2,976 nationally, averaging $2,221, with labor for a prehung exterior French door alone at about $78 to $302. Frame material, size, between-glass blinds and any opening changes move the price, and converting a slider adds stucco and trim work. For comparison, sliding door replacement runs about $1,000 to $7,500 per national guides. Main guide: window replacement in Sacramento.
